Indigenous Heritage

Orang Asli Community

The Orang Asli community of Kampung Sungai Mas, Sungai Lembing, Kuantan, Pahang represents an important indigenous component of the wider Sungai Lembing cultural landscape. The community has a long-standing relationship with its surrounding natural environment, local resources, community institutions and traditional knowledge, making Sungai Mas an important living cultural landscape beyond Sungai Lembing’s well-known mining heritage. Recorded community engagement indicates a substantial settlement, while Sekolah Kebangsaan Sungai Mas continues to support Orang Asli education and human-capital development.

The community also possesses significant potential for community-based tourism, indigenous cultural heritage, traditional knowledge, local entrepreneurship and nature-based economic activities. Consequently, Sungai Mas should be recognised not merely as a beneficiary of development, but as an active custodian of indigenous heritage, knowledge holder and community partner in the sustainable transformation of Sungai Lembing.
